Every
summer, British campers flock in large numbers to the beautiful
beaches along the Vendée coast in western France. After
Brittany, the Vendée is one of the most popular destinations
for campers visiting France, and with some of the best beaches,
not to mention more campsites than any other département
in France, it's easy to see why.
Many
first-time visitors to France make Brittany their destination.
Primarily it is for the beaches that so many families go there,
but the fact that the ferry sails directly there from the UK helps
too, because you don't need to drive too far on unfamiliar roads
and on the 'wrong' side of the road. And if you're planning to
camp, Brittany has more campsite choices than any other region
in France. No wonder Brittany is so popular with the British.
This
is the first in a series of articles covering camping holidays
in France. We have broken the country in the following sectors
and will provide one article per month covering each area - a
tall order but we'll do the best we can in a series of single
articles. We can then build on this in future issues.
Without
a doubt, France is the most popular camping destination in Europe.
Which is hardly surprising given the diversity of landscapes.
There
are around 11,000 campsites scattered across France, ranging from
minimal facility farm campsites (camping à la ferme) through to
all-singing, all-dancing luxury holiday parks.
